International Hydrogen Policy Tracker

Green hydrogen is set to play a key role in efforts to transform the industrial, transportation, and energy sectors for a sustainable, low-carbon future. Germany will have to meet the bulk of its hydrogen needs through imports from regions with more abundant wind and solar resources. Scientists at the Research Institute for Sustainability - Helmholtz Centre Potsdam (RIFS) have developed a database – the International Hydrogen Policy Tracker – to track global policy trends and emerging priorities in this early phase of market development.
“In the initial phase of the development of a global hydrogen economy and technologies, policy measures will be crucial to reduce costs, support investment in supply and demand-side technologies, and stimulate demand by reducing uncertainty. Developed for actors in policymaking, industry, and science, the database provides a systematic and comparative overview of policy instruments in major hydrogen frontrunner countries," explains RIFS research group leader Rainer Quitzow.
The database tracks policy developments across eight countries (Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, Spain, the UK, the USA) and the European Union. Policy measures can be filtered by different types of instruments, segments of the hydrogen value chain, and geographical scope. Instrument types and value chain segments can be filtered by subcategories, allowing for more detailed analyses of policy trends. For example, users can distinguish between technology-open and technology-specific as well as between more production- or innovation-orientated policy styles.
The International Hydrogen Policy Tracker was created as part of the project "Global Potentials for the Production and Export of Green Hydrogen" (HYPAT) funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
